A simple gas detector (similar in size and operation to a smoke detector) is sited above the gas appliance. When gas leaks happen they are detected well before levels reach recommended safety limits. When a leak is detected a warning light comes on and an alarm sounds. In the worse case, leaking gas can build up to dangerous levels which can result in explosions. It detects leaks long before the gas reaches unsafe levels. A cut off valve is connected into the gas supply feeding the appliance. With this valve, when a leak is detected, the gas supply to the appliance is automatically switched off, making the situation safe. Many different alarms are available but we recommend that the alarm you buy should comply with EN 50291, and this should be marked on the box. (the European standard for domestic gas alarms) Also, we only recommend those alarms that have an "end-of-life" indicator - this is an option that only some alarms offer.
